Toyota Recalls 2 17 Million More Cars For Faulty

If you’re associated with the car maker Toyota, the concept of “having a bad day” has quickly turned to having a bad year or so. That is because one of the world’s premier car manufacturers has to issue a recall of another 2.17 million more cars for faulty gas pedals. This comes on the heels of another large recall that Toyota issued in 2009 for similar type issues with other vehicles in their fleet. In this particular instance, there are two different issues to be dealt with, and it affects a number of makes and models produced by Toyota. The first issue that Toyota will be working on is dealing with the gas pedal on these vehicles getting caught in the plastic pad part of the floor mat. This type of thing could easily occur if a consumer was to say go to the carwash, remove the mats for cleaning, and then not put them back in correctly. For this particular portion of the recall, 20,000 2006 and early 2007 model year Lexus GS300 and GS350 All-Wheel cars will need to come in for work to fix this issue. The second part of the recall has to do with a retention clip problem. This retention clip is used in certain Toyota and Lexus models to fasten a piece on the vehicle’s center console. There have been cases where this clip has come loose and gotten in the way of the gas pedal. Citing a CNN article on the topic, Toyota is recalling 372,000 model year 2004 through early 2007 Lexus RX 330, RX 350 and RX 400h SUVs, as well as approximately 397,000 2004 through 2006 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid SUVs. In addition to these cars, Toyota is also increasing the number of Toyotas that were part of the 2009 recall for gas pedals getting caught on thick floor mats. If that were not enough bad publicity for the auto manufacturing giant, it was also announced that the company was also expanding the size of the 2009 recall. In that case, problems with the gas pedal getting caught under thick floor mats caused some cars to have the accelerator stick and led to some horrible crashes. Citing the same CNN article, the vehicles involved in this segment of the recall will include 603,000 model year 2003 through 2009 Toyota 4Runner SUVs, approximately 17,000 model year 2008 through 2011 Lexus LX570 SUVS and approximately 761,000 model year 2006 through 2010 RAV4s. To fix this particular problem, Toyota will have to reform the gas pedal and floorboards in such a way that they will no longer cause problems with the gas pedal, even if it contains those extra thick floor mats. It will be quite the headache for the Toyota mechanic, but in sure they will have business for the foreseeable future. For the Toyota brand name though, it is another black eye on their reputation as they attempt to rebound from a number of years of mechanical and design type issues.
